Lighting the way

The scene of a minimally invasive surgery in the OR of Bryan F. Meyers, MD. A bright bundle of fiber optics transmits high intensity light to a laparoscope, allowing manipulation of internal tissue. The black cable returns a signal from a camera on the laparoscope to a monitor, while the transparent tube removes fluid and smoke. Such procedures replace large incisions, metal retractors and headlights on surgeons – allowing for less painful operations and faster recoveries.
